Kane County Adult Justice Center Overview
The Adult Justice Center, often called the AJC or the Kane County Jail, is operated by the Kane County Sheriff's Office. It is an adult county jail, which means it holds people before and during their cases, not sentenced state prisoners. Most detainees are pre-trial. A smaller number serve short county sentences, and inspection notes say the jail also houses female detainees for Kendall County and detainees for the U.S. Marshals Service. That mix is worth keeping in mind during a search, because not every person on the roster is a Kane County defendant, and a federal pre-trial detainee housed here under a Marshals arrangement can still appear on the county list.
State inspection reports give the firmest building facts. The jail was built in 2008 and is rated for 640 beds, split into 576 male and 64 female. It has 192 double detention rooms and 32 eight-bed dormitories, plus 30 video-visitation stations. The state recorded no compliance problems in its 2024 inspection.
The jail sits on the county judicial and public-safety campus along Route 38, near the courthouse and county offices. That setting matters for visitors, because the jail entrance, the court entrance, and the sheriff's records counter are not the same door. Knowing which one you need before arriving saves a wasted trip across the campus.

Capacity has held steady at 640 beds across the 2022, 2023, and 2024 inspections. The population swings well below that line. State inspectors counted 412 people on June 26, 2024, and the sheriff cited 401 detainees in September 2025. A public roster count on June 9, 2026 returned about 510 names, which is a single moment in time rather than an average.
The 2024 count was about 64 percent of capacity. Even so, the sheriff says rising numbers strained staffing and at times pushed the county to house detainees elsewhere.

Visiting Someone at the Adult Justice Center
The jail uses video visitation scheduled through the JailATM portal. New users create an account, then book a slot up to seven days ahead. Visits run up to 15 minutes, and on-site slots are capped at six per time block. All non-privileged visits are monitored and recorded, and visitors must arrive 15 minutes early with a government photo ID.

Cameras, cell phones, smartwatches, bags, and purses are not allowed in the visiting area. Children under 18 must be with an adult and carry a birth-certificate copy.
Mail, Phone, and Money at the Adult Justice Center
Mail splits into two streams. Routine personal mail goes to a central scanning address in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where it is opened, scanned, and delivered to a tablet. Books, privileged mail, and money orders go to the jail's Route 38 address. Deposits run through TouchPay by phone, online, or kiosk.

Booking and Intake at the Adult Justice Center
After an arrest, a person is brought to the AJC or transferred from a local police lockup. Intake staff record identity, a booking number, an inmate number, property, and a medical and mental-health screening, then assign housing. A booking photo is taken. Charges and court data are added once papers arrive from the Circuit Clerk, so a court date may lag the booking by a short time.
Property pickup runs from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The person collecting property should call Intake and Release first, bring a photo ID, and have a written release.
Bond and Release at the Adult Justice Center
Illinois ended traditional cash bail for new cases, so a judge now sets release conditions at the first appearance rather than a fixed cash amount. Even so, the jail still processes bond payments where one applies, and the FAQ keeps the older bond language. Cash bond is taken 365 days a year, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., in exact cash, with positive identification.
A 100 dollar processing fee applies on top of the bond and is not refundable. Card payments run through CourtMoney, and a payment made between 10:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. starts the release process after 7:00 a.m. The most important caveat is holds: the sheriff checks for outstanding warrants before release, so a detainee with a warrant, an IDOC hold, or an ICE hold can be bonded yet still held for transfer to the agency that placed the hold.
About the Kane County Adult Justice Center
The jail stands out for its programming. The 2024 inspection lists an unusually deep set of education, vocational, and recovery programs, including GED, ESL, forklift and OSHA certification, the Kane-9 Academy, parenting, recovery groups, and tattoo removal. In September 2024 the jail opened a Small Business Development Center, named for Honorable William H. Hall IV, as a satellite of Waubonsee Community College. Its first cohort ran a nine-week start-your-business course with a pitch competition in early 2025.
Health care comes from Wellpath, with 24-hour nursing and EMT coverage, and the 2024 inspection noted no visible pest issues along with recent public-health and fire-safety reviews. Tablets carry a LexisNexis law library and education materials, and the sheriff's A Way Out program offers a countywide path to substance-use assessment and treatment referral connected to reentry staff. Once a detainee here is sentenced to prison, they leave for state custody and are then searched through the state system, such as the Fox Valley Adult Transition Center for some women in transitional placement.
